About the site

FIVEMILE tells you what is going on in Graysville, Cardiff, and Brookside right now. The weather. The creek. When the council meets. What is happening this weekend. That is the whole idea, and it is why the address is fivemile.now.

This is one place. One creek, the same hills, the same weather over all of it, and a good many of the same families. We cover it that way.

Put good information where people can find it. What the weather and the creek are doing before you go out in them. Where the greenway runs and where you can get down to the water. What is happening here, and what is being planned for here. We put it up plainly and leave the deciding to you.

Keep it afterward. A year from now somebody wants to know what the creek did last March, or what used to stand on a lot. The Facebook groups are good for talking and no use for remembering. This is the other half.

You are responsible for what you send. Everything is reviewed before it goes up, and anything published here is published because a person decided to publish it.

There is no AI running on this site. Nothing on these pages is being written or decided by a machine while you read it. When the creek page tells you the water is up, that number came off a gauge in the creek. The note beside it was written ahead of time by a person and matched to the conditions by a plain rule. There is no chatbot here and there is not going to be one.

Some of it is automatic, and automatic is not the same thing as AI. The news page gathers headlines from other publications twice a day and sorts them using a list of rules that a person wrote down and can read back. No model decides what goes where. I do not write those stories and I do not read every one before it appears, so that page is the one place where something reaches you before I have seen it. Every headline links straight to whoever reported it.

I do use AI tools to build the site. Claude helps me write code, draft pages, and catch things I miss. It works for me, the way a good tool does. It does not work on its own and it does not decide anything.

A person decides what runs. Everything written in FIVEMILE's own voice is written or edited by me before it goes up. Nothing publishes on its own.

No invented photographs, ever. Nothing here is an AI generated image and nothing ever will be. Historical photographs are real, sourced, and credited. Around here people can recognize their own grandparents in a picture, and a fake one would be unforgivable.

No invented quotes, people, or history. When something is not known, the site says it is not known.

The mistakes are still mine. Using a tool is not an excuse for getting something wrong. Tell me and I will fix it, and say that I fixed it.

This is an independent community website built on personal time and personal money. Contributions support the development, upkeep, hosting, tools, and expansion of the site itself. They do not go to the City of Graysville, the Town of Cardiff, the Town of Brookside, or to any official municipal account.

I am building this because these three towns are home, and I want the place to have a living record that is useful, welcoming, and worth returning to. Support helps me keep documenting it, improving the site, and adding the tools this project still needs.
